The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has passed legislation designed to make medications and devices for children safer.
The Better Pharmaceuticals and Devices for Children Act was introduced by Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and included as part of a bill to reauthorize the Food and Drug Administration's user fees.
The bill seeks to achieve several goals:
• Ensure pediatric studies are planned earlier in the drug development process.
• Ensure pediatric studies are completed.
• Increase transparency of completed, pending and declined studies in children.
• Continue the success of the pediatric medical device incentive and pediatric device consortia initiative.
The bill now proceeds to a full Senate vote.
