Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey announced that a special joint program launched six years ago with participating in-network hospitals to enhance patient safety has prevented more than 14,000 hospital-acquired infections and saved the healthcare system more than $51 million in avoided treatment costs.
Under the New Jersey Infection Prevention Partnership Program, Horizon BCBSNJ, its participating New Jersey in-network hospitals and CareFusion, the parent company of MedMined, worked to prevent hospital-acquired infections through the deployment of data mining and artificial intelligence technologies. The program has expanded from 10 in-network hospitals to 21 hospitals since it started in 2005.
From 2005 to 2011, the group saw a dramatic 42.16 percent decrease in patients who developed blood infections, including central line sepsis; 14,000 fewer hospital-associated infections; and a 19.28 percent reduction in the Nosocomial Infection Marker rate.
