Two hospitals, Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano (Texas) and Sutter Davis (Calif.) Hospital, have received the 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award — the highest award bestowed annually by the White House for innovation, leadership and quality.
The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology selected this year's Baldrige Award recipients from 22 applicants. Baylor Plano and Sutter Davis received the award, as did Pewaukee (Wis.) School District.
Baylor Plano, a 160-bed hospital part of Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health, received the Baldrige Award based on its consistent performance for quality healthcare measures and high patient satisfaction scores. It also retained more than 90 percent of its first-year employees and all employees for the past three years. Baylor Plano was also praised as a model institution for Baylor's Lean design and STEEEP (safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered) care program.
Sutter Davis, a 48-bed hospital part of Sacramento-based Sutter Health, was also recognized for its high performance scores in quality outcomes, particularly for heart attack, congestive heart failure and pneumonia. In a news release, Sutter Davis CEO Janet Wagner said: "In spite of the struggles that healthcare finds itself in today, there is great care being delivered every day to every patient at Sutter Davis Hospital. This recognition from the Baldrige foundation may seem like the end to a long journey; however, it is just a springboard to executing the many innovative ideas and processes that this complex healthcare environment demands."
The Baldrige judges also honored two other hospitals — Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., and Hill Country Memorial in Fredericksburg, Texas — for their leadership. Kevin Sowers, RN, serves as president of Duke University Hospital. Jayne Pope, RN, is CEO of Hill Country Memorial.
