Patient safety is a philosophy, a discipline and the resulting property of athenahealth's products and services, according to a recent blog post authored by the organization's senior manager of patient safety, Trisha Flanagan, RN, BSN.
Ms. Flanagan helped establish athenahealth's patient safety program five years ago and she continues to work with a team steeped in clinical risk management and safety-centered design backgrounds. Together, they perform daily reviews of all potential patient safety issues that were internally discovered or reported by the organization's clients. They also predict potential failures and work on creating a taxonomy for trending and analyzing reported patient safety issues.
This year, athenahealth is focusing on patient safety by embedding safety training into employee education, both during the on-boarding process and in monthly seminars. "We believe that every employee has an important role to play in assuring the safety of our services," Ms. Flanagan wrote.
Additionally, athenahealth reiterated its commitment to patient safety during Patient Safety Awareness Week by having more than 100 members of the organization submit a handwritten description of how they personally pledge to improve patient safety at the company.
