The Arkansas Department of Health increased the state's tally of mumps to 2,706 on Feb. 1, marking a 182-case increase since Jan. 12.
The outbreak first began in August 2016. Currently, 29 workplaces, 48 schools across 15 school districts, three colleges and three private schools are affected by the outbreak.

The mumps are characterized by painful, swollen salivary glands that incite swelling in the cheeks and jaw. It is a highly contagious disease transmitted by person-to-person contact and is typically accompanied by initial symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.
According to the CDC, two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are 88 percent effective at preventing mumps.
