April deadliest month for Congo's Ebola outbreak: 5 updates

The Democratic Republic of Congo's health ministry identified 15 new Ebola cases May 1, which brings the outbreak total to 1,495, reports CIDRAP News.

Five updates:

1. Of the 1,495 Ebola infections, 1,429 are confirmed. Health officials also reported 984 confirmed and probable deaths linked to the outbreak.

2. Officials are still investigating an additional 306 suspected cases, and 415 people have been cured.

3. In total, officials confirmed 406 Ebola cases and 308 deaths in April, making it the outbreak's deadliest month.

4. The Paul G. Allen Foundation on May 1 pledged $2.4 million to fund projects from the World Health Organization, Red Cross and UNICEF aimed at ending the Congo's Ebola outbreak.

5. The Red Cross will track community outbreak data for healthcare workers, WHO will educate Congolese medical students about Ebola, and UNICEF will create a new text-messaging system to improve outbreak communications.
