At its 40th Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology presented John Calderone, PhD, CEO of the Olympia Medical Center in Los Angeles, with the Annual Healthcare Administrator Award.
The award, which is in its fourth year, recognizes the hospital administrator who has demonstrated a commitment to infection control in his or her work.
Under Dr.Calderone's direction, the intensive care unit at Olympia Medical Center achieved an infection rate of 0 percent in 2012, according to the hospital.
In addition, Dr. Calderone was responsible for guiding Olympia's "Ask Us If We Washed Our Hands" campaign, becoming personally involved in ensuring the success of staff training, campaign implementation and systematic follow-ups where the efforts needed more support.
