West Virginia is now the fifth state to enact the PA Licensure Compact, the American Academy of Physician Associates said March 28.
Washington state joined the compact March 13, while Delaware, Utah and Washington enacted the legislation last year. Lawmakers in Nebraska also recently passed a bill to enact the compact, which is on its way to the governor's desk.
In total, seven states must adopt the compact model legislation for it to become operational.
AAPA, the Federation of State Medical Boards and several other healthcare groups are advocating for state adoption of the interstate licensure compact, which would make it easier for PAs to practice in multiple states.
AAPA stated that once activated, it will take 18 to 24 months to operationalize the compact.
