Healthgrades has announced its annual "America's Best Hospitals" 2013, which recognizes hospitals demonstrating clinical excellence over several years.
Healthgrades' "Best Hospitals" are divided into two categories: America's 50 Best Hospitals, which include the top 1 percent of U.S. hospitals based on performance on at least 19 conditions and procedures over seven consecutive years, and America's 100 Best Hospitals, which include the top 2 percent of U.S. hospitals over four consecutive years.
Hospitals that Healthgrades named Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence — the top 5 percent based on performance on 19 of 27 different conditions and procedures — are eligible to be named a "Best Hospital". Hospitals that have sustained this performance for at least four straight years are named among the 100 best, and hospitals sustaining performance for at least seven straight years are named among the 50 best.
If from 2009 to 2011 all U.S. hospitals performed at the level of Healthgrades' America's 100 Best Hospitals, 165,636 lives could have potentially been saved, according to Healthgrades' report.
