American Society for Microbiology announces $20M diagnostic contest

The American Society of Microbiology has announced a prize contest to see who can create one or more successful rapid point-of-care diagnostic solutions that healthcare providers can use to identify bacterial infections.

The prize amounts to up to $20 million, depending on the availability of finds.

The competition is part of HHS' National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, which was released in March. The competition is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

ASM will host a public consultation regarding the competition Oct. 7 in San Diego. Those interested in submitting written comments may do so through the challenges.gov website from Oct. 1 to Oct. 6.
