A second American stricken with Ebola in Liberia is planned to arrive for treatment in the United States this week while the first transferred patient, Kent Brantly, MD, is improving in isolation at Emory University Hospital.
Dr. Brantly arrived at the Atlanta-based hospital Saturday and was able to walk into the hospital, according to a Reuters report.
The second Ebola-infected American, Nancy Writebol, is expected to start her journey from Liberia to Emory University Hospital on Tuesday, according to a Fox News report. A family member told Fox News Ms. Writebol is "struggling" but there has been some improvement in her condition.
Dr. Brantly and Ms. Writebol were working together in Liberia with a Christian relief group. They could not be transferred together because the specially equipped airplane can only transfer one patient at a time, according to Reuters.
The outbreak of highly infectious and fatal Ebola in West African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone has killed 729 people from March through July 27, making it the worst Ebola outbreak in history, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Further, the outbreak could be spreading outside of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, as Nigeria has confirmed two cases of Ebola, according to TIME.
