The American College of Surgeons and Commission on Cancer announced the release of two separate lists of common but unnecessary tests and procedures as part of the Choosing Wisely campaign.
Each list identifies five common procedures that may not be necessary and that patients should discuss with their physicians. With these new lists, the Choosing Wisely campaign has collated more than 250 overused and inappropriate tests and procedures identified by medical specialty societies, according to the news release.
More than 30 specialty society partners will release Choosing Wisely lists, in some cases their second or third, over the next year.
