Aldehyde disinfectants may be inadequate for endoscope disinfection, according to research published in the American Journal of Infection Control.
For their study, researchers randomly sampled three automated endoscope reprocessors using aldehydes for endoscope disinfection. After disinfection in all three samples, researchers found bacterial contamination persisted. What's more, some mycobacteria isolates showed resistance to other disinfectants, including glutaraldehyde and ortho-phthaldehyde. Researchers concluded aldehyde disinfection may post an infection risk for patients.
