On Tuesday, the American Hospital Association and the CDC issued a new resource for patients and prescribers designed to facilitate active communication about the potential risks and benefits of opioid medications prior to beginning a prescription regimen.
"We want patients to have open, honest conversations with their care providers about the best way to manage pain. The goal is to help patients manage their pain and continue to lead healthy, productive lives," said Rick Pollack, president and CEO of the AHA.
The co-branded factsheet, "Prescription Opioids: What You Need to Know," also includes information about how to use opioid medications safely and effectively as well as strategies for managing pain without prescription opioids.
Tom Frieden, MD, director of the CDC, said, "Starting patients on an opioid is a momentous decision...this tool from AHA and CDC will guide them through these important discussions."
