The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice has published updates for the schedules of three vaccines — the HPV vaccination, pneumococcal vaccination, and the new meningococcal B vaccination.
The complete 2016 adult immunization schedule for all vaccines was reviewed and approved by the American College of Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American College of Nurse-Midwives.
Here are three updates from the 2016 immunization schedule.
- The nine-valent human papillomavirus vaccine was added to the 2016 adult immunization schedule. This vaccine can be used for routine vaccination against HPV as one of the three HPV vaccines recommended for females and one of the two HPV vaccines recommended for males.
- The recommended interval between the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine was changed from between 6 and 12 months to at least one year for immunocompetent adults age 65 and older.
- The ACIP now recommends patients who are 10 years old or older and who are at increased risk for serogroup B meningococcal disease receive the serogroup B meningococcal vaccine. The committee provided a list of factors that constitute an "increased risk" in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
