The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control confirmed eight cases of an orthopedic infection at the USC Specialty Clinic in Columbia, S.C., according to a WLTX 19 report.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control conducted an investigation from November 2013 to May 12. The CDC also took part in the investigation. No deaths were reported.
A spokesperson for the agency released the following statement, according to the report, "Our investigation found naturally occurring bacteria (mycobacteria) that are found in the environment, and in tap water, which are not generally harmful. Although mycobacteria rarely cause illness under normal circumstances, some people may be more susceptible to infection than others."
