6 stats on cancer prevalence, diagnosis and treatment

Two new reports highlight the growing prevalence of cancer, both in the U.S. and globally.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer released its latest estimates on global cancer rates Sept. 12. To create the estimates, IARC examined data on the incidence and mortality rates of 36 types of cancer for 185 countries. The data is housed in the GLOBOCAN 2018 database.

Here are three findings from IARC's report:

1. In 2018, there will be 18.1 million new cancer cases globally and 9.6 million cancer deaths, according to the estimates.

2. The data projects 1 in 5 men and 1 in 5 women will develop cancer during his or her lifetime. The data also projects 1 in 8 men and 1 in 11 women will die from cancer.

3. Lung, breast and colorectal cancers are the most common forms of cancer, followed by stomach and liver cancer.

The American Association for Cancer Research also released its 2018 Cancer Progress Report , which is released every September and highlights the year's achievenments in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Here are three findings from AACR's report:

1. Projected U.S. cancer cases will climb from 1.7 million in 2017 to 2.4 million in 2036. Globally, the number of cancer cases will climb to 24 million by 2035.

2. Between Aug. 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018, the FDA approved 22 new treatments for cancer.

3. Disparities still exist for cancer care, despite advancements in treatment and diagnosis. African-American women are 75 percent more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women, according to the report.
