6 new Zika cases reported in Florida

Florida health officials have confirmed six new Zika virus infections, bringing the state total to 58, according to the Miami Herald.

Three of the new cases are in Miami-Dade County, which leads state totals with 27 cases. Confirmed cases of Zika in pregnant women remains at four statewide.

One case from Polk County in Central Florida confirmed the state's first case of sexually transmitted Zika.

Zika has displayed a strong connection to microcephaly, a birth defect in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. It has also been tied to other neurologically debilitating conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, paralysis and deadly inflammation of the brain.
