Numbers were calculated by dividing the actual number of outcomes at each hospital by the number of eligible discharges for that measure at each hospital, multiplied by 1,000, according to CMS' Hospital Compare, from which the data was extracted. Hospitals with insufficient patient survey data were excluded from the data sorting process. For reference, the national average rate for the ratio of serious complications to discharges is 0.61.
