A woman who became the fourth to be diagnosed with Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in Massachusetts this year has died, according to The Boston Globe.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the EEE case in an Aug. 25 statement. Two hours later, the trade union Teamsters Local 59 announced the patient, Laurie Sylvia, had died. Ms. Sylvia was the wife of Teamsters' President Robert Sylvia Jr.
Massachusetts has recorded 22 human cases of EEE in two outbreaks from 2004-06 and from 2010-12, the DPH said. The department has identified 333 mosquitoes testing positive for the virus in 2019.
