Emergency medicine needs a practical scorecard to measure patient safety over time, according to a study in the American Journal of Medical Quality.
The authors proposed four domains through which to measure safety in emergency medicine:
1. How often patients are harmed.
2. How often appropriate interventions are delivered.
3. How well errors in the system are identified and corrected.
4. Emergency department safety culture.
The authors suggested measures for each domain, but said emergency medicine providers need to reach a consensus on which measures are appropriate.
