4 Findings on Academic Interest in Quality Improvement

Academic interest in quality improvement is on the rise, according to a database analysis study in the American Journal of Medical Quality.

Researchers identified nearly 9,000 original research articles on quality improvement concepts from a search of 10 medicine- and business-oriented databases. An analysis of article volume and content showed:

•    Volume of healthcare quality improvement articles began to increase significantly 22 years ago, in 1991.

•    "Continuous quality improvement" was the most common study topic across the years.

•    Lean methodology, or how to provide value as efficiently as possible, was the topic with the greatest growth in volume since the early 1990s.

•    "Total quality management" was the only methodology to decline in publication volume over time.
