Women's Choice Award recognized 379 hospitals for exceptional patient safety this year.
To create its 2020 Best Hospitals for Patient Safety list, the referral source analyzed hospitals' performance on 11 CMS quality measures, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, postsurgical blood clots and other serious complications. HCAHPS survey data was also assessed.
Hospitals were eliminated from contention if they did not report on at least four of the surgical complication measures or four of the infection measures; had a below-average patient recommendation rating; ranked below the national rate for any of the considered measures; or did not use The Joint Commission's Inpatient Safe Surgery Checklist.
Hospitals that made the list ranked among the top 8 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient safety.
