35 Benchmarks for Rural Hospital Emergency Departments

Data is from iVantage Health Analytics, which has a client base representing more than 10 percent of U.S. hospitals and more than 10 percent of the country's critical access hospitals. Its fifth annual National Rural Emergency Department Study aims to establish a baseline for comparison with national industry statistics that are influenced by the larger patient volumes of urban medical centers.

Data is based off data for 2.8 million total ED visits, which was collected by iVantage's EDManage tool, and 2011 figures represent those from the calendar year.

2007: 6.6 percent

2011: 3.2 percent

2011: 8.3 percent

2009: 8.4 percent
2008: 8.2 percent
2007: 8.7 percent

Transfer rate
2011: 3.9 percent

Mean time to medical screening exam
2011: 30 minutes
