3 ways to make chemo more tolerable

Researchers and physicians are developing new methods to reduce the harsh side effects of chemotherapy and make it more tolerable, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Here are three methods currently being used or developed to provide a better experience for patients using chemotherapy:

  1. A new technology from Hillsborough, Calif.-based startup ChemoFilter entails using a sponge-like material to soak up excess amounts of a chemo drug after it attacks a tumor, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the body.

  1. Swedish drug company Oasmia Pharmaceutical is developing water-soluble versions of common chemotherapy drugs. Since older drugs easily dissolve in water, additives are added to help them absorb into the bloodstream, which can strengthen side effects.

  1. Physicians are also gaining a better understanding of the optimal ways to deliver existing chemotherapy drugs. Methods such as using multiple drugs at lower doses or spacing out chemotherapy sessions have shown positive results in reducing side effects.
