A framework for consumer engagement can help stakeholders classify and evaluate consumer engagement programs, according to a study in Milbank Quarterly.
Researchers conducted a literature review and assessed the programs under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Aligning Forces for Quality initiative. The authors developed the "Engaging Consumers in Health and Health Care in Communities" framework that includes three levels:
1. Individual. This level focuses on individuals' engagement in their own health and healthcare
2. Group. This level involves interpersonal relationships and behavior.
3. Community. This level "represents the larger geographic space, consisting of the physical, economic, sociocultural and political structures in which individuals (and the groups with which they identify) navigate," according to the study.
