The CDC confirmed 90 new measles cases in the past week, bringing the annual total to 555 infections as of April 11, reports CNBC.
1. The CDC has confirmed measles cases in 20 states. Of the 90 new cases, 77 occurred in New York.
2. The state is facing outbreaks in New York City and Rockland County. Health officials in both areas have taken untraditional measures to address the outbreak, including banning unvaccinated children from enclosed public spaces.
3. The current U.S. case count puts 2019 on track to be the worst year for measles since 2000, when the CDC declared the virus eradicated in the U.S. In 2014, the agency reported a record 667 cases.
4. The World Health Organization also reported more than 110,000 measles cases worldwide in the first three months of 2019, a 300 percent increase from the same period in 2018, reports CNN.
