Health officials are investigating two cases of HIV among individuals who received a "vampire facial" treatment at a now defunct spa in Albuquerque, N.M., reports USA Today.
The infected patients underwent the procedure, which involves injecting blood platelets into a person's face, at VIP Spa between May and September 2018.
The New Mexico Department of Health said both clients tested positive for the same HIV strain, which increases the likelihood they contracted the disease from the vampire facial.
The health department first urged spa clients to get tested for HIV and hepatitis B and C in September 2018 after discovering issues with needle storage, handling and disposal at the facility. The spa closed shortly after the health department's inspection.
The department is offering free testing for all former spa clients. More than 100 people have already been tested.
