The following statistics on healthcare communication are from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Medical Expenditure Panel Survey 2009, included in the agency's 2012 National Healthcare Disparities Report.

Proportion of adults who reported a clinic visit with poor communication from healthcare providers:

White — 8.0 percent

Hispanic — 13.0 percent

Black — 11.7 percent

Poor — 15.9 percent

Low-income — 11.6 percent

Middle-income — 9.3 percent

High-income — 6.3 percent

Proportion of adults with a usual source of care whose healthcare providers sometimes or never asked for the patient's help to make treatment decisions:

Hispanic — 18.9 percent

Black — 17.7 percent

White — 14.2 percent

Proportion of adults who needed language assistance at a usual source of care:

Hispanic — 43.8 percent

Non-Hispanic — 46.9 percent

Proportion of adults without a usual source of care who needed language assistance:

Hispanic — 52.6 percent

Non-Hispanic — 38.5 percent
