The following is a list of common procedures with high readmission rates. The list is based on the intersection of two lists from HCUP Statistical Brief # 154: 30 Most Frequently Performed Inpatient Procedures and 30 Procedures With the Highest Readmissions Rates.
Each procedure has a frequency-of-performance ranking in parentheses preceding its associated readmission rate. For reference, the procedure with the highest readmission rate is kidney transplants, which are relatively rare, at 29.1 percent.

2. Debridement of wound, infection or burn (19) — 19.1 percent
3. Heart valve procedures (22) — 18.5 percent
4. Small bowel resection (29) — 18.1 percent
5. Incision and excision of the central nervous system (23) — 16.1 percent
6. Insertion, revision, replacement, removal of cardiac pacemaker or cardioverter/defibrillator (18) — 15.5 percent
7. Coronary artery bypass graft (16) — 15.1

9. Colorectal resection (12) — 14.8 percent
10. Transurethral excision, drainage, or removal urinary obstruction (27) — 13.4 percent
