University HealthSystem Consortium, an alliance of nonprofit academic medical centers, has recognized 13 academic medical centers with the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award.
The award is given to UHC member academic medical centers that are high performers as measured by the UHC Quality and Accountability Study, which examines structures and processes associated with high performance in areas of safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient-centeredness. This year, 102 UHC members were evaluated in the study. Data were pulled from UCH data pools, HCAHPS surveys and the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network.

This award was previously called the UCH Quality Leadership Award. It is now named after Bernard Birnbaum, MD, a healthcare leader and former member of the UHC Member board of directors. He died Sept. 14.
"We hope that by sharing his namesake, this award will serve as a legacy for the many contributions he has made to our industry for many generations to come," said Irene Thompson, vice chair of AMC networks board of managers.
