11 findings on antibiotic resistance

The findings are presented in order of publication in Becker's Hospital Review, from January through May 15.

1. Researchers at St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine found a key step in the transmission of antibiotic resistance from one Acinetobacter bacterium to another, which helps reveal how drug resistance spreads through hospitals.

2. Antibiotics should be used with caution in outer space since they may quickly fuel drug resistance in bacteria, according to a recent study.

3. Training and support related to antibiotic prescribing is lower among nurses and pharmacists than physicians, researchers found.

4. Using a method different from the CDC's to estimate the burden of antibiotic-resistant infections, Seattle researchers found a significantly higher number of deaths from multidrug-resistant infections.

5. Over a five-year period, implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs in the U.S. saved hospitals $732 per patient, a recent study showed.

6. The use of consumer products that contain the chemical triclosan is fueling antibiotic resistance, according to a recent study.

7. A study showed lower-complexity facilities tend to continue antibiotic therapy longer than guidelines recommend.

8. Economic policies are necessary to incentivize antibiotic stewardship and facilitate new antibiotic development, a group of 11 U.K.-based researchers wrote.

9. University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy researchers designed a system that can map out antibiotic trends across the state.

10. While most providers believe that programs aiming to reduce the threat of antimicrobial resistance can improve pediatric care, many admit they use workarounds from time to time, a recent study showed.

11. Drug-resistant infections will kill 10 million people annually by 2050 if the world does not take more action to address antibiotic resistance now, the United Nations said in an April 29 report.
