While more than 4,000 students were granted immunization exemptions last year in New Mexico, many students without vaccinations or exemptions are being enrolled at schools across the state, according to local news station KOB.
An analysis of records within the New Mexico Health Department found 113 schools throughout the state are not adequately tracking students' vaccination records. Data shows schools are allowing students to be on campus without proof of vaccinations or exemptions, a violation of the state law.
Data from 2017 showed of the roughly 24,000 kindergarten students, 389 did not have vaccination or exemptions records on file, KOB reports. One elementary school didn't have the records for 25 percent of its kindergarten students.
New Mexico hasn't seen a measles case since 2004, health officials confirmed. However, as the U.S. is in the midst of the largest measles outbreak since 2000, it is important for vaccination records to be tracked closely.
