Cook County, Ill., has the highest risk of experiencing a measles outbreak, according to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
For the study, researchers created a quantitative model to determine measles outbreak risk for U.S. counties based on four factors: population, nonmedical vaccine exemption rates, international air travel volume and measles incidence in the countries these travelers are visiting.
They identified 50 counties nationwide at high risk of experiencing a measles outbreak. Here are the top 10:
- Cook County, Ill.
- Los Angeles County
- Miami-Dade County, Fla.
- Queens County, N.Y.
- King County, Wash.
- Maricopa County, Ariz.
- Broward County, Fla.
- Clark County, Nev.
- Harris County, Texas
- Honolulu County, Hawaii
