The CDC reported that seven people have been sickened and one has died in a listeria outbreak linked to hard-boiled eggs.
Hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods in Gainesville, Ga., are the likely source of the outbreak, the CDC said. Though the product has not been recalled, the CDC is urging retailers and food service operators not to stock bulk hard-boiled eggs produced at the Almark Foods' Gainesville facility, regardless of use-by date.
People have been infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes in five states: Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. There have been four hospitalizations and one death reported in Texas.
Symptoms of listeria include headache, confusion and loss of balance in addition to fever and muscle aches. In pregnant women, listeria infections can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth and premature delivery. It can also cause the newborn to be afflicted with a life-threatening infection.
