There have been 898 confirmed and probable mumps cases among adult migrants detained in 57 facilities across 19 states since Sept. 1, 2018, with an additional 33 cases among staff members, the CDC said in an Aug. 30 report.
The outbreak began around Oct. 12, 2018, when the Texas Department of State Health Services reported five mumps cases among migrants transferred between two detention facilities in Texas. Additional cases over the ensuing months led the CDC and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Health Service Corps to launch a national response in January 2019.
Eighty-four percent of patients were exposed to mumps while in custody of ICE or another U.S. agency. The CDC is recommending facilities provide MMR vaccinations to detainees and staff members who are at risk for mumps.
There are ongoing outbreaks in 15 facilities in seven states as of Aug. 22.
