There are 164 cases of salmonella linked to raw turkey, leaving 63 hospitalized and one dead, the CDC announced Nov. 8.
"The outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading has been identified in various raw turkey products, including ground turkey and turkey patties," the CDC said.
The current outbreak has been active for a year. The CDC indicated the salmonella strain was found in raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products and live turkeys, meaning it could be spread throughout the turkey industry. The CDC found the same strand of bacteria at 22 different slaughterhouses and seven turkey processing facilities.
The CDC tweeted Nov. 8 wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving while sharing food safety tips.
