A 54-year-old Missouri man died from an infection contracted after eating raw oysters, the St. Louis County Health Department said.
The man was infected with a bacteria carried by oysters and other shellfish called Vibrio vulnificus after eating raw oysters at a business in Manchester, Mo., according to a June 9 agency news release. The man was treated at a local hospital but died June 8.
The oysters are believed to have been contaminated before arriving at the business. Vibrio vulnificus has a mortality rate of approximately 33 percent and causes more than 95 percent of seafood-related deaths, the release said.
