The American Public Health Association will honor 13 public health leaders on Oct. 28 at its annual meeting.
These are the 12 individuals and one organization being awarded:
- Elaine Abrams, MD, from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City will receive a 2024 Martha May Eliot Award.
- Yara Asi, PhD, from the University of Central Florida’s School of Global Health Management and Informatics in Orlando, will receive the 2024 Victor Sidel and Barry Levy Award for Peace.
- Barbara Cole, RN, MSN, from the Riverside University Health System-Public Health in California, will receive the Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Service in Public Health.
- Oklahoma Public Health Association's policy director, McKenzie Cowlbeck, will receive the 2024 Giorgio A. Piccagli Leadership Award.
- Perry Halkitis, PhD, from the Rutgers School of Public Health in Piscataway, N.J., will receive the 2024 Helen Rodriguez-Trias Social Justice Award.
- Kenn Harris from The Emu Consultants will receive a 2024 Martha May Eliot Award.
- Jackson Public Schools in Mississippi will receive the Presidential Citation.
- C. William Keck, MD, from Northeast Ohio Medical University’s Department of Family and Community Medicine will receive the Executive Director Citation.
- Jagdish Khubchandani, PhD, from New Mexico State University in La Cruces, will receive the 2024 Lyndon Haviland Public Health Mentoring Award.
- Alaska government relations director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Emily Nenon, will receive the 2024 David P. Rall Award for Advocacy in Public Health.
- Heath Tillewein, PhD, from Austin Peay State University’s Department of Health and Human Performance in Clarksville, Tenn., will receive the 2024 Ayman El-Mohandes Young Professional Public Health Innovation Award.
- Linda Teplin, PhD, from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in Chicago, will receive the Award for Excellence.
- Former San Diego County public health officer Wilma Wooten, MD, will receive the 2024 Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for Creative Local Public Health Work.
