CMS reported 128 nursing homes have closed or merged in 2022, but the count is likely higher.
Staff shortages, low reimbursements and other financial struggles have led to a string of nursing home closures throughout the year. A report from the Quality, Certification and Oversight Reports shows 128 facilities closed or merged in the last year.
Mark Parkinson, president of the American Health Care Association, told Kaiser Health News the actual count was significantly higher, but the federal reports tend to lag behind what's happening on the ground.
