Newsweek recognized 406 nursing homes across the nation's 20 largest states for high care quality in its Best Nursing Homes 2020 list.
Data research firm Statista compiled the ranking on behalf of Newsweek. Researchers assigned each nursing home an overall score based on CMS performance data (85 percent) and responses from a national survey (15 percent). Statista analyzed CMS data published in July on three measures: health inspections, staffing and quality. They also polled 46,000 medical experts, including nurses, nursing home managers and physicians, on nursing homes' reputation.
