Reno, Nev.-based Renown Health is collecting genetic information from about 35,000 community members as part of its Healthy Nevada Project, reports NEJM Catalyst.
Renown Health and the Desert Research Institute in Paradise, Nev., launched the Healthy Nevada Project in September 2016. The community-based population health study aims to use genetics, environmental data and individual health information to improve the health of Nevadans.
Renown Health President and CEO Anthony Slonim, MD, said the study's pilot phase gained 10,000 participants in the first 48 hours, all of whom shared saliva samples for the project. The project's next stop will be Clark County, Nev., where Renown Health plans to enroll about 25,000 people.
"In contrast to other clinical trials, not only are we getting information from participants, we're giving information back about how they can modify their risks for health, change their behaviors and hopefully mitigate their risks for disease.," Dr. Slonim said during a NEJM Catalyst event in October.
