The second quarter of 2024 saw about a 5% decrease in hospital pharmacist job postings compared to last year, according to a report from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
The AACP's pharmacy demand report recorded 2,228 open hospital pharmacy positions in the second quarter of 2023, and a year later that figure dropped to 2,110.
For the first half of 2024, demand was still higher than it was in 2023 after a 12% increase in open positions in the first quarter. Overall, there are 2.5% more job postings in 2024 compared to 2023.
The decrease in demand might be tied to shifting staffing trends. Michael Hogue, PharmD, said in a July 2 blog post that hundreds of pharmacists are transitioning from patient care roles to largely work-from-home positions at drug companies and specialty markets.
