A weekly huddle that reduces patient harm at 1 hospital

In January, Lawrence + Memorial and Westerly (Conn.) established a weekly huddle between nurse leaders and other departments to help improve communication and reduce potential harm.

The huddles started with supply chain leaders but have expanded to food and nutrition services and human resources.

"These regular meetings help us address issues immediately and develop processes to prevent them from recurring," Shannon Christian, MSN, RN, the hospital's chief nursing officer and senior vice president of patient care services, told Becker's

The huddles have helped prevent potential patient harm and have helped address issues in a timely manner, rather than chasing down emails, she said.

"As the issues decrease, we periodically evaluate the need for the huddles, but the feedback from our teams is to continue them because they find them valuable," Ms. Christian said.
