Video-based coaching may be a useful tool for surgeons' continuing medical education, according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Researchers videotaped a complex operation performed separately by four different participants: a chief resident with an operating senior surgeon, a surgeon with less than 10 years of experience, a surgeon with 20-30 years of experience and a surgeon with more than 30 years of experience. Video playback was used as coaching sessions with a peer-judged surgical expert.
The coaching sessions focused on operative technique and decision-making. All groups identified episodes of failure and alternative approaches during the coaching session. The participants also agreed that coaching via video playback is a powerful tool.
