Texas cancer center snags $25M donation from Fox family

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso received a $25 million gift from the Fox Family Foundation to help build West Texas' first comprehensive cancer center.

The Texas Legislature allocated $65 million to build the Steve and Nancy Fox Cancer Center, while the foundation's gift will be used to fund clinical trials and recruit staff, according to an Aug. 8 news release from the TTU Health Sciences Center El Paso.

"We have to recruit the finest group of doctors in the country," Steve Fox, CEO of Fox Auto Team, told El Paso Matters in announcing the donation as part of a "Hope Begins Here" initiative. "We have to bring the best researchers, the best nurses. We have to build a team of superstars."

Design on the center is underway and the new cancer center may open as soon as 2025.

Dr. Richard Lange, president of the TTU Health Sciences Center El Paso, told El Paso Matters he expects the new facility to "literally change healthcare in El Paso and the region."
