HCA plans to close 160-bed Spring Branch Medical Center in Houston by May 1 due to significant losses and increasing competition in recent years, according to a story in the Houston Chronicle. The hospital is part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA's Gulf Coast Division.
Spring Branch, which lost $21 million in fiscal 2008, has operated in the community for more than 50 years and will continue to provide outpatient programs like radiation oncology, imaging services and urgent care, according to the Chronicle.
HCA, which acquired the hospital in 1986, tried to sell Spring Branch to the Harris County Hospital District several months ago, but district officials said they needed to resolve strategic planning issues before considering acquisitions.
