Appeals Court Upholds Healthcare Reform Law

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in Cincinnati has upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, becoming the first appellate court to rule on the healthcare reform law, according to a Washington Post report.

The three-judge panel ruled 2 to 1 in favor of the PPACA, upholding the constitutionality of the individual mandate. One Democratic appointee, Judge Boyce F. Martin Jr., and one Republican appointee, Judge Jeffrey Sutton, voted to uphold the law.

The suit in question was filed by the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center. Two other lawsuits against the PPACA are currently being considered by appellate courts and another is expected to move to the Circuit Court of Appeals in September. If any of the appeals panels repeal the law, the issue would move to the Supreme Court.
