100 hospital and health system CMOs to know | 2020

Becker's Healthcare is pleased to name the "100 hospital and health system chief medical officers to know" in 2020.

Physician executives featured on this list are dedicated to strengthening their organizations through clinician leadership development, patient safety initiatives, health IT and quality improvement. Many have served as department heads and continue to practice medicine, while others focus on process improvement and patient advocacy. As proven leaders in their field, the physicians highlighted on this list have extensive experience building clinical and administrative teams. They play an integral role on the executive team moving their organization's strategic vision forward while always keeping the patient front and center.

Josh Adler, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of UCSF Health; Vice Dean of UCSF School of Medicine. Dr. Adler oversees the clinical integration and quality and safety initiatives for UCSF Health and the system's medical school. He also leads faculty practice operations, the health system funds flow program and population health initiatives. Beyond his role as vice president and chief clinical officer, Dr. Adler also manages the UCSF Health network of integrated physicians and works with the clinical departments and chairs at the medical school to align clinical, research and education priorities.

Aamina Akhtar, MD. CMO of Mercy Hospital South (St. Louis). Dr. Akhtar became head of the medical staff at Mercy Hospital South in September 2019. She is responsible for acting as a liaison for the medical team and overseeing quality, safety, risk and medical staff services. Dr. Akhtar is an infectious disease specialist who joined the system at Mercy Hospital South, then called St. Anthony's Medical Center, in 2005.

Machelle Allen, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of NYC Health + Hospitals (New York City). Dr. Allen is CMO of the nation's largest public health system, which has more than 70 locations across New York City's five boroughs. She is a longtime veteran of the system, having previously served as interim CMO since June 2016. Before becoming CMO, she served as deputy CMO of the system and as associate medical director of NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Nishant Anand, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of BayCare (Clearwater, Fla.). Dr. Anand oversees the clinical team at BayCare, a 15-hospital nonprofit health system. He leads the physician agenda and directs quality improvement efforts. Before joining BayCare, Dr. Anand was senior vice president, chief transformation officer and CMO of Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System, which has since rebranded as AdventHealth. He has experience with population health, clinical standardization and overseeing value-based care efforts.

Anthony Avellino, MD. CMO of Michigan State University HealthTeam (East Lansing). Dr. Avellino stepped into his current position at Michigan State University in February 2018 and spent his first year rebuilding the system's entire quality infrastructure. He previously served as CEO of Peoria-based OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute, where he was responsible for more than 84 clinicians and 166 support staff across 23 care locations. In 2009, Dr. Avellino became the founding director of the UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute in Seattle before being named chief of neurological surgery at UW Medical Center, also in Seattle, in 2011.

Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Howard County General Hospital (Columbia, Md.). Dr. Ahmed joined the leadership team at Howard County General Hospital, part of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine, in 2016. Prior to that, Dr. Ahmed held various leadership positions at Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health, including COO and CMO of the system's eastern region. He also previously served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps.

Michael Anderson, MD. CMO of CHI Franciscan (Tacoma, Wash.). Dr. Anderson became CMO of CHI Franciscan in October 2016 after serving in an interim capacity for about eight months. He first joined the health system in 2013 as vice president of medical affairs for Bremerton, Wash.-based Harrison Medical Center. Before joining CHI Franciscan, Dr. Anderson spent more than three decades serving in the U.S. military, during which time he held various medical leadership roles.

Alejandro Arroliga, MD. CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health (Dallas). Dr. Arroliga joined Baylor Scott & White Health in 2006 after spending more than 10 years as a professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic. He was named CMO in October 2019 after serving as chairman of the Scott & White Clinic board of directors and chief of staff at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, among other roles. In his current position, Dr. Arroliga provides clinical direction for more than 7,500 physicians across more than 1,100 care sites.

Sam Bagchi, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Christus Health (Irving, Texas). Dr. Bagchi became chief medical information officer and CMO of Christus Health in 2017. He stepped into his current position in June 2019 as part of a larger restructuring of Christus Health's executive team. Dr. Bagchi previously served as chief medical and quality officer of Evanston, Ill.-based Presence St. Francis Hospital and senior vice president and CMO of Dallas-based Methodist Health System.

Thomas Balcezak, MD. CMO of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hospital and Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Balcezak has spent more than two decades holding senior leadership positions at Yale New Haven Health. He served as the senior vice president of patient safety and quality at Yale New Haven Hospital before being named CMO in 2014. His role expanded in 2016, when he was also named CMO of the health system.

David Battinelli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Northwell Health (New Hyde Park, N.Y.). Dr. Battinelli served as Northwell's senior vice president and chief academic officer for six years before being named CMO in 2013. He came to Northwell from Boston University School of Medicine, where he served as vice chair of education and director of the school's internal medicine residency program. Alongside his current CMO role, Dr. Battinelli is also a professor of medicine and vice dean at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in East Garden City, N.Y.

Marjorie Bessel, MD. Chief Clinical Officer of Banner Health (Phoenix). Dr. Bessel joined Banner Health 14 years ago, initially serving as CMO of several system hospitals. She became Banner's chief clinical officer in 2018. Dr. Bessel's other previous leadership roles at Banner include vice president/CMO for community delivery, vice president of continuum management and vice president of clinical integration.

Kavitha Bhatia, MD. CMO of Strategy at Prime Healthcare (Ontario, Calif.). Dr. Bhatia became Prime Healthcare's first CMO of strategy in June 2019. Under her strategic vision, the healthcare organization achieved more than $60 million in savings last year alone and tripled in size over five years. Dr. Bhatia is also chair of the Prime Healthcare Foundation and previously served as vice president of clinical transformation.

Kent Bishop, MD. CMO of ProMedica Physicians Group and Acute Care Hospitals and Chief Experience Officer of ProMedica (Toledo, Ohio). Dr. Bishop joined ProMedica Physicians Group in 1994 and was named CMO in 2018. Under his leadership, the medical group created customized work models that led to a 95 percent retention rate among primary care physicians. Dr. Bishop has also served as ProMedica's inaugural chief experience officer since 2017.

Andrew Bland, MD. Vice President and CMO of Hamilton Health Care System (Dalton, Ga.). Dr. Bland became CMO of Hamilton Health Care System in June 2019 after serving as medical director for the division of healthcare quality evaluation at The Joint Commission. His background also includes time as chief quality officer and CMO at Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System and assistant dean for faculty development at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria.

Jeremy Boal, MD. President of Mount Sinai Downtown and Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Mount Sinai Health System (New York City). Dr. Boal served as executive vice president and CMO of the Mount Sinai Health System before stepping into his current role in 2017. Dr. Boal is tasked with overseeing the creation and management of the system's $1 billion investment to build a replacement facility for Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital, construct a new behavioral health center, and upgrade the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. The revamped medical campus, known as Mount Sinai Downtown, is slated to open in New York City in 2023.

John Bonamo, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Quality Officer of RWJBarnabas Health (West Orange, N.J.). Dr. Bonamo first joined RWJBarnabas Health in 1981 as part of the medical team at the system's Livingston, N.J.-based Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Since then, he's held numerous leadership positions at the hospital, including senior vice president for medical affairs. He became CMO of RWJBarnabas Health in 2015 after serving as Saint Barnabas' CEO for nearly 15 years.

William Bornstein, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of Emory Healthcare (Atlanta). As CMO and chief quality officer of Emory Healthcare, Dr. Bornstein has led and expanded the Emory Healthcare Office of Quality and Risk to national recognition. The board-certified internist and endocrinologist currently chairs the Vizient University HealthSystem Consortium Medical Leadership Network Steering Committee and co-chairs the Anthem National Advisory Panel on Value-Based Solutions. He was appointed by former Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the Governor's Special Advisory Commission on Mandated Health Insurance Benefits in 2012 and the Governor's Ebola Response Team in 2014.

Bernard Boulanger, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of MetroHealth System (Cleveland). As MetroHealth System's executive vice president and chief clinical officer, Dr. Boulanger directs operational and clinical efforts for the system's 7,500 employees at over 20 locations. Before MetroHealth, Dr. Boulanger held several roles at Lexington, Ky.-based UK HealthCare, most recently serving as chief medical officer.

Brent Box, MD. Senior Vice President, CMO and Associate Chief Clinical Officer of AdventHealth (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). As senior vice president, CMO and associate chief clinical officer of AdventHealth, Dr. Box leads the development and implementation of patient safety, quality and care transformation programs as well as clinical analytics, clinical documentation and information systems. He was previously senior medical director and chief of hospital medicine for AdventHealth. He is a senior fellow of hospital medicine in the Society of Hospital Medicine and a fellow of the Health Management Academy's GE Fellowship Program. He has served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy and spent 15 years in private practice.

Sandra Brooks, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Center City Division (Philadelphia). Dr. Brooks joined Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals at its Center City Philadelphia division after spending time as CMO of St. Joseph's Women's and Children's Hospitals, part of the 14-hospital BayCare Health System in Clearwater, Fla. She was also CMO of CompleteCare Health Network, a 19-site multispecialty federally qualified health center in New Jersey.

Joseph Cacchione, MD. Executive Vice President of Clinical and Network Services at Ascension (St. Louis). Dr. Cacchione serves as Ascension's executive vice president of clinical and network services, leading the organization's clinical and physician enterprises, clinical quality, managed care services, and Ascension Insurance. Under Dr. Cacchione's direction, Ascension reduced injuries, infections and adverse events by 2,246 patients last year. The organization, under his leadership, also successfully reduced clinical variation in sepsis care, which saved 264 lives and more than $14 million during fiscal year 2019.

Sri Chalikonda, MD. Chief Medical Operations Officer of Allegheny Health Network (Pittsburgh). Dr. Chalikonda is Allegheny Health's chief medical operations officer, leading clinical operations for eight hospitals that house over 2,200 beds. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Chalikonda has written dozens of published scientific articles, abstracts and book chapters, with topics including the surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer, the treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies and the minimally invasive treatment of liver disease.

Phillip Chang, MD. CMO of UK HealthCare (Lexington, Ky.). Dr. Chang is chief medical officer at UK HealthCare, which was ranked Kentucky's No. 1 hospital for the fourth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. He received his medical degree from Norfolk-based Eastern Virginia Medical School and specializes in general surgery, acute care surgery, and trauma and surgical critical care. Dr. Chang's work has been published numerous times and focuses on trauma or opioids in surgical settings.

Judie Charlton, MD. CMO of West Virginia University Health System and West Virginia University Hospitals (Morgantown). Dr. Charlton became WVU Medicine's primary physician executive in 2011. She is responsible for the health system's clinical services and also serves as the vice dean for clinical affairs at the WVU School of Medicine. She has experience as chair of the WVU ophthalmology department and overseeing University Health Associates, the system's physician practice plan. She announced in April 2019 that she intended to step down from the CMO role, but will remain with the organization until a replacement is found.

Amy Compton-Phillips, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Providence (Renton, Wash.). Dr. Compton-Phillips oversees clinical care, including clinical institutes, nursing, pharmacy, research, telehealth and quality at Providence, a 51-hospital health system with 119,000-plus caregivers and employees serving across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington. She joined Providence in 2015 after 22 years at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, where her latest role was chief quality officer of The Permanente Federation. A board-certified internist, Dr. Compton-Phillips is on the WellCare board of directors and the board of MultiScale Health Networks, a joint venture between Providence and Johnson & Johnson.

Joe Corcoran, DO. CMO of HCA Healthcare Far West Division (Las Vegas). As HCA Healthcare Far West Division's CMO, Dr. Corcoran oversees all clinical and quality services at nine hospitals and six surgical centers in Nevada and California. He is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with more than 20 years of direct patient care experience. Dr. Corcoran has been with HCA Healthcare for over seven years and previously spent time as the CMO of Brandon (Fla.) Regional Hospital.

Patrick Courneya, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals (Oakland, Calif.). As the executive vice president and CMO of Kaiser Permanente's National Health Plan and Hospitals, Dr. Courneya helps ensure quality service is offered for the organization's 12.2 million members. He previously served 10 years as medical director and associate medical director for Bloomington, Minn.-based HealthPartners Health Plan. He chairs the Chief Medical Officer Leadership Council at America's Health Insurance Plans and the Medical Directors Council at the Alliance of Community Health Plans.

David Crabb, MD. CMO of Eskenazi Health (Indianapolis). After serving as chief of medicine at Eskenazi Health, Dr. Crabb was appointed CMO in 2017 and now oversees around 1,000 physicians. He is also a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association, and is a master of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Crabb became the director of the Indiana Alcohol Research Center in 2002, which, under his leadership, has become one of the longest continuously funded alcohol research centers in the U.S.

Ravin Davidoff, MBBCh. Senior Vice President and CMO of Boston Medical Center. Dr. Davidoff oversees clinical operations at Boston Medical Center, the largest safety-net hospital in New England, with more than 25,000 admissions and 1.1 million patient visits last year. He also manages BMC's medical executive committee, which includes coordinating its graduate medical education programs and its research program. Dr. Davidoff is a professor of cardiovascular medicine and associate dean of clinical affairs at the Boston University School of Medicine, as well as president of Boston University Affiliated Physicians.

Isabelle Desjardins, MD. CMO of The University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington). Dr. Desjardins serves as the CMO of the University of Vermont Medical Center, an academic medical center partner of a four-hospital network. She is a psychiatrist and has held several clinical leadership roles since arriving at the University of Vermont Medical Center in 2003. Dr. Desjardins received her medical degree from the University of Montreal Faculty of Medicine in Canada and has been practicing for more than 20 years.

Octavio Diaz, MD. CMO of Tenet Healthcare’s Palm Beach and Miami Dade Groups (Dallas). As chief medical officer of Tenet Healthcare's Palm Beach and Miami Dade Groups, Dr. Diaz leads clinical operations at 10 acute care hospitals with 5,000 affiliated physicians. He received his medical degree from Chicago-based University of Illinois, completed his residency at Worcester-based University of Massachusetts Medical Center and served as an emergency physician for over 25 years. Dr. Diaz has held leadership positions with Tenet since 2013 and previously was an assistant professor of emergency medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical School.

William Ellert, MD, MSN. CMO of Abrazo Health and Arizona Care Network (Phoenix). Dr. Ellert joined Abrazo Health as CMO in 2014 and oversees care quality and the medical staff at six hospitals, an employed physician group, ambulatory centers and freestanding emergency centers. He serves on the board of directors of the Arizona Care Network, an ACO founded in 2012 and co-owned by Abrazo Health and San Francisco-based Dignity Health's Arizona division, which includes more than 5,500 healthcare providers. He also serves as CMO of the Arizona Group for Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, Abrazo Health's parent.

Sunil "Sunny" Eappen, MD. Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Dr. Eappen has served as senior vice president of medical affairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital since July 2018. He assumed his current role after serving as chief of anesthesiology and CMO of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. At Brigham and Women's, he oversees physician recruitment and retention, medical affairs and development of new clinical care delivery strategies. He is also an associate professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Darryl Elmouchi, MD. CMO of Spectrum Health System and President of Spectrum Health Medical Group (Grand Rapids, Mich.). As CMO of the $6.5 billion nonprofit Spectrum Health System, Dr. Elmouchi oversees the clinical quality, safety, patient experience and telehealth services of 14 hospitals and 230 ambulatory sites. He is also president of the multispecialty Spectrum Health Medical Group, overseeing 1,700 physicians and advanced practice providers. Since taking over as CMO at Spectrum in June 2017, he has helped improve physician satisfaction by nine points over 18 months and formed an office of quality, safety and experience.

Eric Fish, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Schneck Medical Center (Seymour, Ind.). Dr. Fish joined Schneck Medical Center in 2005 as a medical provider and founded Schneck Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2006. He became vice president of medical affairs and CMO of the hospital in 2017, overseeing a medical staff of nearly 200 physicians. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Fritz François, MD. CMO and Patient Safety Officer of NYU Langone Health (New York City). Dr. François, a gastroenterologist, assumed his current role at NYU Langone Health in 2015. He led efforts to open the NYU Langone Kimmel Pavilion and Hassenfeld Children's Hospital, both in New York City. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Dr. François led a multidisciplinary team from NYU Langone to deliver care to victims. He received several awards for these efforts, including the Humanitarian Award from the Health Education Action League for Haiti.

Harris Frankel, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Nebraska Medicine (Omaha). Dr. Frankel joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2011, after 21 years of private practice, and became a member of its executive leadership team in January 2014. He is a neurologist with an interest in health IT. He is a past president of the Nebraska Health Information Initiative and is president-elect of the Nebraska Medical Association. In addition to serving as CMO of Nebraska Medicine, Dr. Frankel is an assistant professor in the neurological sciences department at UNMC's college of medicine and medical director for the UNMC-Physicians Clinical Neurosciences Center.

Ernest Franklin, MD. Chief Medical Operations Officer of Tenet (Dallas). Dr. Franklin oversees quality, safety, clinical research and graduate medical education for Tenet Healthcare's 65 hospitals and approximately 500 other healthcare facilities. He joined Tenet in January 2019, after working at Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health, where he was senior vice president of clinical value and integration. During his tenure at Tenet, he has narrowed the organization's quality focus to six metrics from 56 and is developing national physician leadership councils to allow physicians to weigh in more on quality issues.

Michael Glenn, MD. CMO of Virginia Mason Health System (Seattle). Dr. Glenn became CMO of Virginia Mason Health System in 2013. He has worked on Virginia Mason's medical staff for 25 years, specializing in head and neck surgery, thyroid surgery and conditions of the ear, nose and throat. He is chair of the American Medical Association's Integrated Physician Practice Section Governing Council and previously served on the American Academy of Otolaryngology's board of directors.

Jonathan E. Gottlieb, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Executive of IU Health (Indianapolis). Dr. Gottlieb joined IU Health in October 2014 after serving as CMO for the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine, he has also previously served as assistant vice chancellor for clinical affairs at Washington University's School of Medicine in St. Louis. As chief medical executive for the Indiana University Health System, he oversees quality of care, research and educational activities for the 2,708-bed system.

Keith Gray, MD. CMO of UT Medical Center (Knoxville, Tenn.). Dr. Gray is the CMO of UT Medical Center as well as the chief of the division of surgical oncology at the hospital. As part of his responsibilities, Dr. Gray is leading a comprehensive 10-year effort to reduce health disparities and promote health equality and wellness in the Knoxville area. He also earned his physician executive MBA in 2014 at the University of Tennessee and served as the class president.

Randall Haight, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs at Capital Region Medical Center (Jefferson City, Mo.). Dr. Haight is an internal medicine specialist with experience in physician leadership and creating a culture of collaboration. He is a physician champion at Capital Region Medical Center and a patients' rights advocate. Dr. Haight now oversees the clinical team at the 100-bed hospital.

Michael Henderson, MD. CMO of University of Mississippi Medical Center (Jackson). Dr. Henderson is a general surgeon with specialty interests in hepatobiliary pancreatic and liver transplant surgery. He has served as CMO of University of Mississippi Medical Center since 2015. During his tenure, the hospital improved several quality metrics, including increasing hand hygiene compliance from a baseline of 53 percent to 89 percent as of February 2019 and reducing hospital-acquired infections by 60 percent by the end of 2018. He also launched a patient safety initiative focused on event reporting and learning, called Chasing Zero, in 2018. Before joining University of Mississippi Medical Center, he was chairman of general surgery and chief quality officer at Cleveland Clinic.

Russell Holman, MD. CMO of LifePoint Health (Brentwood, Tenn.). Dr. Holman joined LifePoint as CMO in 2013. In his role, Dr. Holman oversees the health system's quality and patient safety programs, clinical effectiveness, patient experience and engagement and clinical informatics. A former president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Holman was honored by the organization in 2002 as the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award in Hospital Medicine, and in 2011, he was named one of 10 masters in hospital medicine in the U.S.

Tallulah Holmstrom, MD. CMO of KershawHealth (Camden, S.C.). Dr. Holmstrom was appointed CMO of both KershawHealth and Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, S.C., in 2016. She has served in various leadership positions at KershawHealth, including chief of staff and chairwoman of the department of medicine, as well as a board trustee. In June 2016, Dr. Holmstrom helped bring telemedicine services to KershawHealth's intensive care unit.

Eugene Hong, MD. Chief Physician Executive of MUSC Health (Charleston, S.C.). Dr. Hong oversees the practice plan and physician team at MUSC Health, a role he took on in March 2018. His clinical practice focuses on sports-related injuries, overuse, concussions and cardiac issues in athletes. Prior to taking on his current role, Dr. Hong spent time as the chief of the primary care sports medicine division at Drexel University in Philadelphia as well as chair of the Drexel University Physician Board.

Cassandra Howard, MD. CMO of Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown (Tenn.) Hospital. After serving as medical director for Methodist Germantown's emergency department since 2014, Dr. Howard ascended to the hospital's clinical leadership role. She is a graduate of the 2014 Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Physician Leadership Academy, and has served in the U.S. Air National Guard for more than 29 years, where she is colonel. Dr. Howard also serves as the state air surgeon at Joint Force Headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

Syed Ahmed Hussain, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Trinity Health of New England (Hartford, Conn.). As senior vice president and CMO, Dr. Hussain is responsible for patient safety, quality outcomes and patient experience, regional medical and clinical education and risk management at Trinity Health of New England. He joined the health system in 2018 to help advance its regional hospital clinical integration and establish clinical practice standardization, among other initiatives. He is a member of the National Association of Health Services Executives.

Michael Jablonover, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of the University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Dr. Jablonover was appointed senior vice president and CMO in 2015. Before serving as CMO, Dr. Jablonover was CEO of University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute for five years. From 1995 to 2005, Dr. Jablonover was an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was involved in residency training programs, a hospitalist program and medical student education programs.

Amir Jaffer, MD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Queens (New York City). As chief quality officer and CMO, Dr. Jaffer oversees clinical programs, quality, safety, infection control, accreditation, clinical research and pharmacy initiatives at the 535-bed medical center. Prior to his 2017 appointment at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, Dr. Jaffer was associate CMO for clinical affairs at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Ghassan Jamaleddine, MD. CMO of Alameda Health System (Oakland, Calif.). In addition to overseeing medical operations, including quality of care and patient safety, Dr. Jamaleddine also helps lead the development of Alameda Health Partners, the health system's physician organization. As CMO, Dr. Jamaleddine leads care coordination, clinical information systems and physician engagement strategic initiatives at Alameda. Prior to joining the health system, Dr. Jamaleddine was CMO at New York City Health + Hospital/Kings County Hospital in New York City.

Kevin Joseph, MD. Senior Vice President of Quality and CMO of TriHealth (Cincinnati). As senior vice president of quality and CMO, Dr. Joseph oversees the development of quality and safety programs delivered at TriHealth's six hospitals and 140 practice locations. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives and American College of Emergency Physicians.

Bryan Kelly, MD. Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). In addition to his role as surgeon-in-chief and medical director at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Kelly also serves as head team physician for the New York Rangers and associate team physician for the New York Giants. Dr. Kelly specializes in sports medicine injuries and arthroscopic and open surgical management of non-arthritic hip disorders. He also serves as chief emeritus of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City.

Munish Khaneja, MD. CMO and Lead of Clinical Innovation at Altruista Health (Reston, Va.). As CMO and lead of clinical innovation at Altruista Health, Dr. Khaneja oversees clinical strategy and regulatory innovation across products and services at the health system. Prior to joining Altruista, Dr. Khaneja was a managed care executive at Affinity Health Plan and Emblem Health, where he led pharmacy, quality and medical management initiatives.

J. Douglas Kirk, MD. CMO of UC Davis Medical Center (Sacramento, Calif.). As CMO, Dr. Kirk leads the professional portion of the clinical delivery system at the 625-bed UC Davis Medical Center. The physician scientist also serves as senior officer for patient safety and quality, and is a liaison between the hospital, school of medicine and medical staff. Before becoming CMO, he was UC Davis Medical Center's chief of staff and associate CMO.

Michael Langberg, MD. Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). As senior vice president of medical affairs and CMO, Dr. Langberg spearheads Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's patient safety and clinical quality efforts. He also oversees the hospital's bioethics, resource management, healthcare-acquired infection prevention, epidemiology and physician credentialing initiatives. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and previously served on the California Hospital Association's Board of Trustees.

Stephen Lockhart, MD, PhD. CMO of Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.). With more than 30 years of healthcare experience ranging from board-certified anesthesiologist to hospital administrator, Dr. Lockhart now oversees Sutter Health's quality, patient safety, research and education initiatives. The Rhodes scholar earned his master's in economics from Oxford University and serves on several boards, including the ECRI Institute, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to patient safety and cost-effective healthcare.

Dennis Lund, MD. CMO of Stanford Children's Health and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford (Palo Alto, Calif.). After establishing himself as a trauma, transplant and general pediatric surgeon at Boston Children's in the 1990s, Dr. Lund held elevating titles including surgeon-in-chief of the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital in Madison and Phoenix Children's Hospital, until he joined Stanford Children's in March 2015 as CMO. Dr. Lund also serves as the associate dean of faculty for pediatrics and obstetrics at Stanford University, and held a nearly year-long appointment as the health system's interim president and CEO. Dr. Lund is heavily involved in healthcare advocacy, holding fellow status with the American Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics.

John Lynch, MD. Vice President, COO and CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). Dr. Lynch has held the CMO position at Barnes Jewish Hospital since ascending to the spot in July 2009. He oversees the 700-plus medical staff of the hospital and was appointed the hospital's chief operating officer in 2017. An internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care specialist, he's served Barnes-Jewish Hospital since 1995. Dr. Lynch holds fellow status with the American College of Chest Physicians.

Tom Miller, MD. CMO of University of Utah Health (Salt Lake City). In addition to overseeing all executive and clinical medical issues at University of Utah Health, Dr. Miller also is a practicing and teaching clinician in the university's general medicine division. His is also responsible for the medical staff at the health system's ambulatory clinics. Dr. Miller first joined of University of Utah Health in 1992 where he completed his residency in internal medicine.

Corbi Milligan, MD. CMO of Methodist North Hospital and Methodist South Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). Dr. Milligan has overseen medical activities for Methodist's North and South Hospitals since October 2017. She joined Methodist after a tenure at EmCare Hospitalists in Nashville, where she was medical director of the Tristar Health division. At EmCare, she oversaw 11 hospitalist groups in three states with more than 100 physicians and advanced practice professionals. Before that, she was chief of staff at StoneCrest Medical Center/Hospitalists at StoneCrest in Smyrna, Tenn.

David Moorhead, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of AdventHealth Clinical (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). Dr. Moorhead leads the medical staff at AdventHealth Clinical, a 50-hospital system with more than 80,000 providers. Prior to joining the health system in 2006, Dr. Moorhead was president and CEO of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, where he helped establish the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. He is actively involved in healthcare advocacy, holding membership in the American College of Physician Executives, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Association of Pediatric Urologists.

Rekha Murthy, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and Acting CMO of Cedars-Sinai (Los Angeles). Dr. Murthy is responsible for the patient safety, hospital epidemiology and infection prevention initiatives at Cedars-Sinai. She has previous experience as medical director of the department of hospital epidemiology, where she spent 21 years. Her experience also includes time on the guidelines committee of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and on the California Department of Public Health's Healthcare-Associated Infection Advisory Committee. Dr. Murthy monitors treatment outcomes daily and works with physicians on quality improvement initiatives.

William Neff, MD. CMO of UCHealth (Aurora, Colo.). As the head of clinical decisions for UCHealth, Dr. Neff oversees a care staff that spans 12 hospitals and more than 150 clinics in Colorado, southern Wyoming and western Nebraska. He also served as interim system president and CEO for more than a year during a national search to fill the positions. Dr. Neff is a founding partner of Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professional Consultants, which grew from a local community practice to a behemoth medical group of more than 70 providers serving 14 hospitals and surgery centers

John Nunes, MD. Far West Division CMO of HCA Healthcare (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Nunes is a board-certified gynecologist who worked over three decades in private practice and nearly three years as a chief quality and safety officer for St. Charles Health System in Oregon before becoming CMO of MountainView Hospital in May 2018 and assuming his current position in July 2019. He also was director of women's services for Pleasanton, Calif.-based Valleycare Medical Center and CMO of St. Charles Medical Group. He has experience with physician engagement and a strong interest in surgical mentoring.

Mark Olszyk, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Carroll Health Center, a LifeBridge Health Hospital (Westminster, Md.). A certified physician executive, Dr. Olszyk is the Carroll Health Center's liaison between its medical staff, clinical leadership, administrative teams and board of directors. He has more than 20 years of healthcare experience and completed tenures at the Veterans Health Administration's Office of Quality, Safety and Value and at VA Maryland Health Care System. Dr. Olszyk is currently serving his second term on the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Paryus Patel, MD. Corporate CMO of Prime Healthcare (Ontario, Calif.). Overseeing the clinical operations of 28 hospitals in 12 states, Dr. Patel is responsible for a portion of the hospital's 2.6 million annual unique patient visits. With more than 29 years of clinical and 18 years of management experience, he approaches the patient experience through a scientific approach, leveraging data and process improvement to support his clinical decisions. During his tenure, Prime Healthcare has received several honors from institutions like Healthgrades, IBM Watson and The Leapfrog Group.

Maria D. Padin, MD. CMO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (Lebanon, N.H.). After ascending to the CMO role in November 2015, Dr. Padin began leading efforts to coordinate the hospital's clinical staff and collaborate with the hospital's chief nursing officer and chief quality officer. She joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock Concord in 1997 as an OBGYN. She became department chair and then was named medical director of D-H Concord in 2010. Dr. Padin is a former treasurer and secretary with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD. President of Clinical Services and CMO of Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Perlin oversees clinical services and implements performance improvement initiatives at HCA's 185 hospitals and more than 1,000 associated clinics. He came to HCA in 2006 after serving as undersecretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, leading the nation's largest integrated health system. Dr. Perlin is a clinical professor of medicine and biomedical informatics at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University.

Robert Phillips, MD, PhD. Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Executive and Specialty Physician Group CEO of Houston Methodist. As chief physician executive of Houston Methodist, Dr. Phillips holds the top physician leadership position of the seven-hospital health system. He is an expert in hypertension and cardiovascular disease and a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell College of Medicine. Before joining Houston Methodist, he served as senior vice president and director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

B. Stephens Richards, MD. CMO of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (Dallas). Dr. Richards serves as the CMO and director of inpatient services at the 52-bed Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, as well as the director of the Center for Excellence in Foot. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with specialties in clubfoot, scoliosis and spine and is also a professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the department of orthopedic surgery. Dr. Richards is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has been on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics since 1998.

Norman Rizk, MD. CMO of Stanford (Calif.) Health Care. As CMO of Stanford Health Care, Dr. Rizk leads the efforts to improve the health system's quality and safety. Dr. Rizk is also the senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor in Medicine. A specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine, Dr. Rizk is also medical director of the intensive care unit at Stanford, where his work focuses on critical care-related illness and complication prevention and control.

Daniel Roth, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Trinity Health (Livonia, Mich.). As chief clinical officer, Dr. Roth is responsible for leading Trinity Health's clinical operations. He is also accountable for community health and well-being initiatives and implements programs to improve health in the community. Dr. Roth joined Trinity, a 92-hospital health system with 129,000 employees, in 2015 as both CMO and COO. Before joining Trinity, he served as CMO for Mercy Health in Cincinnati.

Julian Schink, MD. CMO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (Boca Raton, Fla.). In addition to his role as CMO, Dr. Schink serves as chief of gynecologic oncology, medical director of gynecologic and medical oncology, and senior vice president of clinical affairs for CTCA Chicago. Dr. Schink is board certified in gynecologic oncology, obstetrics and gynecology and has been published more than 125 publications dedicated to oncology and women's health. He joined the National Cancer Care Network in May 2017 and has held several academic positions, including as the John and Ruth Brewer Chair in Gynecology and Cancer Research Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Jan Schwarz-Miller, MD. Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer of Atlantic Health System (Morristown, N.J.). As chief medical and academic officer, Dr. Schwarz-Miller is responsible for quality, patient safety and infection prevention for Atlantic Health System, which has seven hospitals and 17,000 employees. Dr. Schwarz-Miller joined Atlantic Health System in 1996 and has overseen multiple departments, including pharmacy services, infection prevention and corporate health. She is board certified in internal medicine and preventive medicine/occupational and environmental medicine.

Steven Shapiro, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of UPMC (Pittsburgh). Dr. Shapiro became chief medical and scientific officer of UPMC in 2010 and is active in conducting clinical research, with several new potential therapies currently in clinical trials. Before joining the 40-hospital health system, he was the Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the chief of the pulmonary and critical care division at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Shapiro also serves as a member of the FDA's pulmonary-allergy drugs advisory committee.

Adhi Sharma, MD. Executive Vice President for Clinical and Professional Affairs and CMO of South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, N.Y.). As CMO, Dr. Sharma is responsible for facilitating medical staff interactions with South Nassau's administration and for ensuring the 445-bed hospital provides quality medical care. Dr. Sharma is board certified in toxicology and emergency medicine and is an associate professor of emergency medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Hempstead, N.Y. Before joining South Nassau, he served as the chair of emergency medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y.

Gulshan Sharma, MD. Vice President, CMO and Clinical Innovation Officer of University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston). As CMO and clinical innovation officer, Dr. Sharma oversees clinical operations for UTMB's four hospitals with more than 11,000 employees. He is also the director of the division of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine and the Sealy and Smith Distinguished Chair in internal medicine. Dr. Sharma has a master's degree in public health from the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.

Anne Shriner, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Nash UNC Health Care (Rocky Mount, N.C.). Dr. Shriner became CMO of Nash UNC Health Care in the fall of 2019 after spending time as vice president of medical affairs and CMO at Wooster (Ohio) Community Hospital. Dr. Shriner is an OB/GYN with more than 20 years of experience in private practice. In her current role, she oversees the clinical team for the health system, including the 280-bed Nash General Hospital.

Timothy Sielaff, MD, PhD. CMO and Senior Vice President of Specialty Care and Research of Allina Health (Minneapolis). As CMO, Dr. Sielaff is responsible for advancing Allina Health's quality agenda and clinically leading the health system's 11 clinical service lines. Dr. Sielaff also serves as senior vice president of specialty care and research and previously spent time as medical director of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Dr. Sielaff also has experience serving on the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors.

Angelo Sinopoli, MD. Vice President of Clinical Integration and CMO of Prisma Health (Greenville, S.C.). As CMO and vice president of clinical integration, Dr. Sinopoli is responsible for implementing healthcare delivery initiatives involving quality, access and efficiency. He first joined Prisma Health in 1982 as a resident and, under his leadership, the health system is developing a regional clinical integration network. He is board certified in pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine and is a professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.

Kirk Sloan, MD. CMO of St. Joseph Medical Center (Kansas City, Mo.). As CMO of the 310-bed acute care facility, Dr. Sloan is responsible for ensuring patients receive the highest standard of medical care and improving clinical services. During his time at St. Joseph Medical Center, Dr. Sloan has led the effort to establish the only geriatric-accredited emergency department in the Kansas City area. Prior to joining St. Joseph, Dr. Sloan worked as a hospitalist at St. Francis Health in Topeka, Kan.

Robyn Strosaker, MD. Vice President and CMO of UH Case Medical Center (Cleveland). Dr. Strosaker is the vice president and CMO of UH Case Medical Center as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She operates as director of the Rainbow acute care network and the pediatric hospital medicine program as well as associate professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. Dr. Strosaker's special interests include general pediatrics, autism and pediatric hospital medicine.

Gary Stuck, DO. CMO of Advocate Aurora Health (Downers Grove, Ill., and Milwaukee). In addition to his role as CMO of Advocate Aurora Health, Dr. Stuck is CEO for Advocate Physicians Partners, the system's clinically integrated network with 5,000 physicians. He practiced family medicine for more than 30 years and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Stuck's breadth of healthcare experience includes serving as chair of the Advocate Physician Partners board of directors for 13 years and as president of Advocate Christ Medical Center’s PHO for 22 years.

Lisa Tank, MD. CMO of Hackensack University Medical Center (Edison, N.J.). During Dr. Tank's 17-year tenure at Hackensack University Medical Center, the flagship hospital of Hackensack Meridian Health, she has traversed the spectrum of house calls, nursing facilities and hospital and consultative services. She is a board-certified geriatrician and is currently pursuing a master's in business administration at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In her role as CMO, Dr. Tank spearheaded several programs, including establishing a center for bioethics, providing physician wellness programs and expanding palliative care services and population health initiatives.

Andrew Ta, MD. CMO of Broward Health (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Dr. Ta has more than 14 years of physician leadership experience and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Before joining Broward Health in 2017, he served as CMO at Florida International University's College of Medicine in Miami, associate CMO at Jackson Medical Group and Physician Services and as an attending physician at Aventura (Fla.) Hospital and Medical Center. In addition to his medical degree, he holds a master's in healthcare administration from the University of Miami and a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Dallas.

Thomas Tracy Jr., MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. Dr. Tracy served in numerous leadership roles at Providence, R.I-based Brown University and Lifespan health system before joining Penn State Health in August 2016. Operating as senior vice president and CMO for the system, he oversees more than 1,100 physicians and providers. Dr. Tracy is a pediatric surgeon and served as chairman of the American College of Surgeons Advisory Council of Chairs from 2011 to 2013 and chairman of its Council for Pediatric Surgery from 2008 to 2013.

Bruce Vanderhoff, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of OhioHealth (Columbus). Dr. Vanderhoff has been at OhioHealth for 24 years, serving as senior vice president and CMO since December 2008. His responsibilities include advancing the 12-hospital system's physician leadership program, supervising organizational alignment around patient safety and quality as well as leading utilization management and medical affairs. A former private practice family medicine physician, Dr. Vanderhoff is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Ralph Velazquez, MD. CMO at OSF HealthCare (Peoria, Ill.). Dr. Velazquez worked as CMO of OSF Health Plans for 13 years before transitioning to senior vice president of care management at OSF HealthCare in 2009. In 2017, he was appointed to his current role, where he leads the development of OSF HealthCare's clinical strategy and goals as well as its programs to improve clinical performance and practice standards. Dr. Velazquez manages academics and research, accountable care, care management services and quality across the system's 13 acute care facilities and two colleges of nursing.

Stephen Weber, MD. Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of University of Chicago Medicine. Since 2011, Dr. Weber has served as CMO and vice president for clinical effectiveness at the University of Chicago Medicine, which includes a medical center, Pritzker School of Medicine and the biological sciences division. He joined UChicago Medicine in 2002 after he completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Weber specializes in the management of a variety of infections, with a particular interest in antimicrobial resistant infections in vulnerable populations and engages in ongoing research on the interface between public policy and infection prevention in hospitals.

Joseph Weinstein, MD. CMO of Steward Health Care System (Boston). A cardiologist by training, Dr. Weinstein was appointed CMO of Steward Health Care System in July 2016. He is responsible for ensuring quality outcomes and experiences for patients, enhancing behavioral health access and quality and using technology to better serve patients. Previously he served as vice president of medical affairs at Steward's Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Mass., and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Mass.

Patrice Weiss, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Carilion Clinic (Roanoke, Va.). Responsible for leading almost 1,000 physicians, Dr. Weiss manages all aspects of clinical operations at Carilion Clinic. She is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and is the American Hospital Association Committee on Clinical Leadership's chair-elect for 2020. Dr. Weiss has published several peer-reviewed articles and has spoken at numerous events on physician recruitment and retention, physician compensation models and the transformation of volume-based to value-based healthcare structures.

Mark Welton, MD. CMO of Fairview (Minneapolis). In 2017, Dr. Welton was appointed CMO of Fairview, a nonprofit health system that includes 10 hospitals, 5,000 providers and more than 30,000 employees. Previously he served as the Harry A. Oberhelman Jr. Professor of Surgery and chief of colon and rectal surgery at Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine as chief of staff for Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Welton also serves on the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation.

David Wessel, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Hospital and Specialty Services at Children's National Health System (Washington, D.C.). In addition to his role as executive vice president and CMO at Children's National Health System, Dr. Wessel is also a professor of anesthesiology, critical care medicine and pediatrics at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He spent 20 years at Boston's Children's Hospital, holding several leadership roles, before joining Children's National in 2007. Board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatrics, Dr. Wessel is renowned for his work in pediatric heart disease and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Thomas Whalen, MD. CMO of Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, Pa.). Dr. Whalen has served as CMO of Lehigh Valley Health Network for nearly a decade. In this role, he oversees clinical activity across the 1,800-bed network. Dr. Whalen brings to the role his experience as a critical care surgery specialist, as well as military experience. He served for nearly 30 years as a commissioned officer in the medical corps of the regular and reserve U.S. Navy.

Robert Wiebe, MD. CMO of CommonSpirit Health (Chicago). Dr. Wiebe is CMO of CommonSpirit Health, which operates 142 hospitals in 21 states. He was appointed to the role in 2018 after Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives and San Francisco-based Dignity Health merged to create CommonSpirit. Previously, Dr. Wiebe was Dignity Health's executive vice president and CMO and served the Veterans Integrated Service Network.

David Wood Jr., MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Beaumont Health (Southfield, Mich.). Dr. Wood oversees the 1,000-member Beaumont Medical Group as well as Beaumont Physician Partners and Beaumont educational and research programs. A cancer surgeon, he joined Beaumont from Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Health System, where from 2002 to 2011 he served as chief of the health system's urologic oncology division. Dr. Wood also previously worked in leadership roles at Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute, all in Detroit.

Robert Wyllie, MD. Chief Medical Operations Officer of Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wyllie joined Cleveland Clinic in 1981 and took on increasing leadership roles until he became chief medical operations officer in 2019. He also has experience as the chief of Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital and the Calabrese Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, where he recruited 160 physicians to join the division.
