A woman from Denton, Md., was sentenced to five years of probation after she falsely represented herself as a registered nurse and worked as a nursing home's RN supervisor in 2023.
Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 29, 2023, Nicole Vanhorn worked nine shifts at Denton Nursing and Rehab, according to the Maryland attorney general's office. To gain employment there, Ms. Vanhorn, 38, fraudulently used credentials of a Pennsylvania registered nurse with a similar name and falsely represented herself as a graduate of two Pennsylvania universities.
While at the nursing home, she administered medications and supervised registered nurses, geriatric nursing assistants and certified medical assistants, the attorney general's office said in a Jan. 30 news release.
This caused Maryland Medicaid to pay $3,576.20 for nursing services that were not rendered.
On Jan. 22, Ms. Vanhorn pleaded guilty to one count of Medicaid fraud valued over $1,500. The first three years of her probation will be under supervised parole.
